		<description>Year: 2011 &#124; Instructor: Brad Bartlett

Poster was selected into the semifinal phase of Adobe 2011 Achievement Awards

The word HAPTIC is used for the title of Nagi Noda’s Exhibition of Animal-Inspired Hair Hats. HAPTIC refers to things relating or pleasant to the sense of touch. It is used as a guide word to indicate an attitude that takes into consideration how we perceive things with our senses.

In the exhibition, 15 headpieces are shown to celebrate one of Nagi’s skills — creating sulptures or hair hats styled out of real human hair with her hands. Thus, the logo is hand drawn in a way that make the word HAPTIC becomes a hair sculpture visually.

There are two versions of the poster. One features the pattern in order to bring impact to the audiences. The other one contains more information about the exhibition and the creator, Nagi Noda.

The Japanese American Museum's mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of America's ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Thus, the main concept of the JAM logo is to emphasis the idea of mixed culture.

By taking the initial letters to form the logo, the word "JAM" presents the idea of mix. Beside the English version, the logo also has a Japanese version, which is intended for use both individually and simultaneously.

Circle is another element of the JAM logo. It has a meaning of merging and also symbolizes the Japanese aesthetic itself. Moreover, it is also a key element in developing the environmental wayfinding system. Based on the same circle used in the logo, an arrow is used to replace the dot in order to display the direction to different parts of the museum.

The logo can be used individually or simultaneously with the Japanese version.

The E3 logo is created by combining the letter “E” and the number “3” to form an equal sign. The logo operates as the main source of the corporate identity system, and as the registered trademark of the E3 Electric Vehicles orporation. The trademark is intended for use on its own to be placed on the car and once the new identity has been well stablished to represent E3 when the company name is not necessarily to show. However, the use of this logo is still in primary use on the 2-D applications. The simple construction of the trademark creates a minimal structure that is used to shape a dynamic symbol to represent the E3 Vehicles Corporation.

		<description>Makeup for Men
Year: 2011 &#124; Instructor: Gerardo Herrera

Featured at The Dieline

overview
Taking a light-hearted approach and acknowledging the lifestyle of men, the new makeup line, DUO, helps men
to become comfortable and confident with who they are and be proud of their masculine beauty.

The chosen brand is NARS. Being proud of its revolutionary approach to women, NARS has a high potential to extend its market to include men.

Although the masculine beauty signs are not well known, it occupies a new position nowadays. Men of all the ages begin to seek, in a growing rhythm, what women have already accepted and conquered for a long time: the improvement of the self-esteem and better social insertion. This new need creates a fresh idea in the makeup market and inspires creative packaging and products’ solutions that help NARS to accomplish its brand.

target audiences
The new men’s makeup line is targeted on metrosexual.

The term metrosexual does not equal to homosexual. Metrosexual is a man with heightened aesthetic sense, spends time and money on appearance and shopping, living or working in the city, where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He has clearly taken himself and his urban lifestyle as his own love object.

In the Eighties he was only to be found inside fashion magazines, in television advertisements. In the Nineties, the term was getting popular. Nowadays, metrosexual men have become the male trendsetter and have a high potential of being the future of masculinity.

In recent years, the point of purchase for products and services has become an important focus for marketers. Research from the POPAI’s “Consumer Buying Habits” study has shown that two-thirds of consumer purchase decisions are made at the point of sale and in some categories, impulse purchases at shelf accounts for as much as 85% of sales. Point-Of-Purchase (POP) displays and package design are the last opportunity to influence consumer perception. Thus, beside developing the form and packaging for DUO, POP is also part of the project to reinforces the brand equity through imagery and also provide information about pricing and features.

" Winnie Yuen from Art Center College of Design is a force to be reckoned with. Her design for Duo, a make up line for men by NARS emphasizes the minimum, sleek, elegant look of the brand, yet distinctive as a line created specifically for men."

A 250-page exploration on the Eames House, a place for the work and life of Charles and Ray Eames. The Eames House, Case Study House #8, was one of roughly two dozen homes built as part of The Case Study House Program in Los Angeles’ Arts and Architecture Magazine. Begun in the mid-1940s and continuing through the early 1960s, the house focus on the use of new materials and technologies developed during World War II. The intention was for the house to be made of prefabricated materials that would not interrupt the site, be easy to build, and exhibit a modern style.

Charles and Ray proposed that the home they designed would be for a married couple working in design and graphic arts, whose children were no longer living at home. They wanted a home that would make no demands for itself, and would serve as a background for, as Charles would say, "life in work" and with nature as a "shock absorber."

The book is divided into six sections. Besides talking about the history and the structure of the Eames House, I focus on the Eames--how shows their design process, their view of a home, their philosophy about design, their lifestyle, and their relationship is reflected from the Eames House.

Transmedia identity and rebrand for the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, which is a a nonprofit exhibition space and and archive of the visual arts for the city of Los Angeles. The identity is created entirely from a basic graphic element, a diagonal line. The initials are separated by having the lines of each letter pointing at different angles. The identity system has applications through prints, website, and the events that are hosted by LACE.

A trans disciplinary class sponsored by Microsoft called for projects based around the theme "Service Meets Social". Steps is an online resource and community for educators. With lesson plan databases, member profiles, and a series of expandable integrative applications and devices, Steps brings networking to K-12 education and allows innovative ideas to be shared beyond the classroom.

More about the expo can be found on Microsoft's website.

An in depth look at our project can be viewed on our project website Learningbysteps.com

CONTEXT
We had fourteen weeks to research, conceptualize, and propose our project idea. During the beginning of our project, the iPad was announced, so it was an opportunity to imagine how the tablet can exist in the classroom environment. One of the challenges we faced was also how much does a classroom need a tablet while there are very useful traditional tools? Through the allotted timeframe, we decided to focus on the youngest group of students our project allowed--5-year-olds--and conducted field research of how kindergarteners orient tablets.

We also interviewed teachers and found that teachers weren't sharing their ideas and lesson plans to other teachers. Holding onto teaching jobs has become a competitive environment and unfortunately students are getting the short-end of the deal. Therefore, our project morphed into focusing on teachers to come together as a community and share their experiences, ideas, and passion to one another. We wanted our project celebrates teachers.

By the end of the 14 weeks, our group of the 5 groups in the class, was selected to present our project at the 2010 Microsoft Research Design Expo in Redmond Washington.

IMPACT
Steps is a project that aims to impact education--improve the classroom environment, help teachers become more comfortable with the system they work for as well as encourage young talented and passioned individuals to become teachers. A component of STEPS, is an app store called Bookshelf. Bookshelf is the place for teachers to either buy or download apps which they can collect and organize into their lesson plan.

Those who create and contribute to the development of the apps could either be the school district, school, teachers, as well as third-party developers. Bookshelf provides a space that can help generate revenue for the Steps system. Creating a successful app or lesson plan can also be an incentive for teachers because the more that their created app/lesson plan is downloaded, the more obvious the success is of their creation. With that, teachers who contribute back into the system can be rewarded through recognition.

CRAFT
STEPS has tablet app prototypes that were developed on the iPad and HP Touchsmart. The HP touchsmart was used for the teacher's tablet and the iPad app was for the students. We imagined that the tablets be made specifically for the classroom. Students should have limits to their tablets and not be allowed to stray away from the lesson plans. While teachers are prepping up for the next assignment, students can play with more constructive games.

Though tablets are quite expensive today, they are more likely to become more affordable. The tablets are used to demonstrate the classroom's usage of tablets; however, teachers control the content of their tablets through the teacher's social network: http://www.stepsforteachers.com/. This website allows teachers to come either in the beginning or end of the day to review their lesson plans and then sync it to their tablets. Teachers can review and comment on their lesson plans as well as check up on other teacher's lesson plans.

Though, it is easy to hope that steps would have all teachers to share their ideas, the reality is Steps can only provide the interactive tools and encouragement for 21st century teacher to use 21st century social interaction.

-----------------
Steps made it to the selection round of the IxDA 2012 Interaction Awards!

We are joined by such esteemed companies such as Ziba, Frog, Smart Design, HUGE, IDEO, R/GA, Method, Crispin-Porter, Nokia, and Microsoft.

Art Center was one of ten universities represented in this round, including Copenhagen, Delft, Umea, and CCA. Art Center and CCA were the only US schools to have projects make this round. I'm so proud that Steps is one of that very select group!
